University of Southern Mississippi senior Tyokia Parker offered a simple, yet succinct, reason for wanting to participate in preliminary construction of a Habitat for Humanity home as part of a national day of service on Sept. 11.
“I like the idea of being able to help people, especially when it involves giving them a new home,” said Parker, a Lumberton, Miss., native majoring in psychology. “I want to make an impact on someone else’s life.”
Parker joined more than two dozen Southern Miss students on the construction site in Petal for the official wall-raising of Habitat for Humanity’s 60th home in the Pine Belt area. The Office of Community Service Learning at Southern Miss, in partnership with the AmeriCorps program, coordinated the students’ involvement.
