Lamar County residents will have new option for recycling | News
PURVIS, MS (WDAM)- Lamar County officials are giving county residents a new way to reduce the amount of trash going to local landfills. Beginning in late August, residents will be able to recycle paper and plastic products by dropping them off at one of seven recycling bins across the county.
The Lamar County Board of Supervisors will contract with Advanced Disposal (Sumrall Recycling). That company will provide the bins and handle the recycling at no cost to taxpayers.
In July, a group of concerned citizens had asked the Board to consider setting up the recycling program.
"These containers don't look like a dumpster," said Phillip Carlisle, District 4 supervisor. "They're well-marked as to what can go in them. And what we don't want is abuse. We don't want items set out beside them. If that begins to occur, then this Board of Supervisors I would imagine, will end the program," Carlisle said.
Lamar County has had a recycling program for its employees since 2009.
Recycle bins will be placed at the following locations:
---Lamar Park Community Center
---Lamar County North Barn on Hwy 98
---Oak Grove Optimist Park
---Sandy Run Road Community Center
---Multipurpose Center, Purvis
---Oak Grove Fire Dept. on Hwy 24
---Senior Center on W. 4th Street
