HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- The City of Hattiesburg is increasing the sewer rates for Petal and some Lamar County customers who use their wastewater lagoon.

Petal residents are concerned and voicing their opinions after finding out their sewer bill alone may increase from $28 to $85 a month.

"I don't think it's right, they shouldn't do it," said Petal resident, Reda Heenis.

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- The Hattiesburg City Council is expected to vote soon, possibly as early as next week, on its preferred method to upgrade the city's sewer lagoon system.

The two options on the table are to build a new mechanical treatment plant, or use the land application method where waste is treated, then pumped to a site where sewage becomes fertilized irrigation for wooded areas.
